For many years science has been studying the benefits of swimming, and it has come up with some great results – here is some of the benefits that humanity’s greatest friend has discovered:

Swimming helps with weight loss

Yes, you read it right! Swimming helps you lose weight – it burns your calories like butter on a frying pan!

A mere one hour of swimming can burn up to 600-900 calories, depending upon the speed of your swim and your weight. The faster you swim, and the more you weigh the more calories you burn on that frying pan!

Swimming helps lower depression and stress levels

This is my favourite health benefits of them all. Every time I have a swim, my mood is more positive, I am calmer, more relaxed and happier!

The calming effects of the water, combined with the movement of your body, as well as the rhythm of your breath – create a meditative state as you glide through the water.

You might live longer

Results from some studies point towards swimming as a great way to increase human lifespan. A study by University of South Carolina, found that those who swam had a 50 percent lower death rate than that of runners, walkers, or men who didn’t exercise.

We don’t need to find the fountain of youth – the fountain of youth has already been discovered by way of swimming in Corfu waters!

Strengthens the Lungs

Swimming works the heart and lungs. It does so by training the body to use oxygen more efficiently – the rhythmic breathing that is required helps strengthen the lungs.

Builds patience

Swimming is a somewhat “slow” exercise. Getting from one place in the water to the other is a slow process. It requires a constant effort to maintain the pace of the swim – often the energy to maintain that pace is quite taxing, and the distance although short, it is actually quite long in the water.50-meters on land may be completed in a relatively short amount of time – in the water it takes much longer. It takes patience to know that it will take you time to arrive at your destination.

Corfu is the best place to get all these benefits, as the waters are amazing to swim in.

Next time you find yourself at one of our magical beaches – try and swim!
