Cycling on Corfu

If walking is not fast enough for you, you can also explore the island on a bike! Corfu is, according to the people who come here to cycle, the perfect place for a cycling holiday! The varied landscape offers a new view around every corner. There are more than 200 villages scattered around the island and the inland villages have stayed largely uninfected by mass tourism. Old pastel-coloured houses, a little church and a village square where time seems to stand still. These villages are connected by a maze of roads and paths, so that you never have to take the same road twice. A little-known fact is that Corfu has the most dense road network of Europe! So bring your bike or rent one here and cycle away…

The South has a landscape of rolling hills, the beautiful Korission lake and many kilometers of scantily populated sandy beaches along the west coast. In the middle are the plains of the Ropa valley with grapevines and meadows and the west coast rising toi the cliffs above Glyfada, Ermones and Paleokastritsa. The northwest is very varied with hills and little villages scattered throughout the country side. In the northeast lies the Pantokrator mountain with beautiful landroads on its slopes and a high difficulty rode to the top (over 900 meters). If you would really like to cycle up the Pantokrator you’d better leave it for the end of your stay so that you can have enough training!

There are several travel agencies offering cycling holidays in Corfu but if you prefer to explore the island alone you can hire a bicycle in almost all tourist resorts. In any case, make sure you have some water with you, avoid to undertake far rides on very hot days and don’t worry about food. You will come across many little tavernas, but also enough fruit trees where you can pick a ripe fig, an orange or some berries!
